The contribution of VEC Consultant’s engineers for HCM city – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway project20/01/2015
HCM city – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway project is part of North – South expressway project, located in the economic focal area of Southern region, it is one of the area’s most dynamic development and contribute the majority on the national economy. This economic focal area is a critical junction of highway, marine, waterway, aviation, major international exchanges and the attractions area of foreign investment in the country. Therefore, the development of this area is very important for the development of the southern region and the country. HCM city – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway project is an important part in the overall direction development of area.
The total length of project is 51km, including 06 packages (1a, 1b, 2, 3, 5, 6). The soft soil areas were mainly located in 04 packages which crossing on District No.2 & No.9 of HCM city and Long Thanh district of Dong Nai province, with the design pavement from 04 to 06 lanes.
VEC Consultant is a member of Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) – the Employer of the project. Since the establishment, with a team of engineers gathered from many leading consulting company in Vietnam, VEC Consultant engineers always ready to be participated into the VEC’s projects.
The Detail design document of HCM city – Long Thanh – Dau Giay project has prepared in 2008 by Joint venture of Consultants: Nipppon Koei-Hafico group-KRI Internation Corporation-Mekong Economics Ltd.
Coordinated with the Hafico group, VEC Consultant engineers have participated in Surveying and Designing of project. It was a heavy task of the young consultant company. in additional, the working with the foreign partners have been required the high professionalism in the works. However, this was also a great opportunity for learned valuable experiences from the foreign experts in the great project.

Being involved in the project was the pride of us – VEC Consultant engineers. After received the mission from the company, we immediately went on the way to implement the project. Away home, we spent all of time for the works: review drawings all night; discussion of design solutions in the meal; at least twice a week working with the foreign partners: in the Monday morning to made weekly schedule and in the Saturday morning for checked of weekly results;
Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway crossing on the wetlands, canals with soft soil layer was relatively thick. Therefore, in addition to the soft soil treatment, the project also used viaduct was a kind solution to cross the soft soil areas.
Most of the structures in the project have been designed and calculated by the VEC Consultant engineer. Beside the implement drawings follow the document in FS stage, the engineers have proposed the optimal solutions. For example: Replaced span structure with higher safety, more accordant with the expressway; Extended the span for more accordant with the terrain; Changing the bridge location and rehabilitation of flow for more safety. At the interchanges, we used the modern and beauty structures such as: curve box girder; cylinder pier with bowl form. Changing the foundation for more accordant with the area have many buildings and populated. We also used the appropriate construction method for more safety. In particular, Long Thanh is a beauty bridge used 06 restrained support continuous spans and slender structure. The study and consideration of the alternatives of pier has spent a lot of time to chosen the most appropriate structure. Construction method for main span used precast concrete caisson. This method in accordant with the deep river condition and water level fall and rise continuously.

All of the construction methods have been proposed in Detailed design stage, which focused to ensure the work higher quality, cheaper expensive, safer in the operation stage. That is one of the methods for improvement the quality of expressway project in Vietnam.
We felt very lucky because participated in the HCM city – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway project, one of great and important project in transport sector, working with the professional consultancy expert, has collected the valuable experiences for the next projects. We grew up of the technical and working method and solution to solve the problem in the consultant field. This is the experience only get when you are involved in great projects, really concern with the complex problems in the process of the project
